Koudan connects time and heart with a slap on the shakudai desk.Koudan is a solo art form that can be smooth, aggressive, or even hold a rhythm like in music. It goes into depth about Japanese history and culture while captivating the audience. The Koudanshi (storytellers) tells stories based on history, as well as recent news, daily life, public opinion, and society.

1979: Started training under Kanda Sanyo II.
1982: Promoted to futatsume (the second highest rank).
1988: Promoted to shinuchi (the highest rank).
2006: Appointed chairwoman of Japan Koudan Association.
2016: Appointed representative director of the Japan Association for the Promotion of Koudan.
2016: Graduated from Waseda University (Department of Human Informatics and Cognitive Sciences, Faculty of Human Sciences).
A Message from Kanda Yoko
Koudan has been traditionally passed down as a storytelling art for men. My career started when I was taken under the wing of Kanda Sanyo II in the 1970s, amidst the women’s liberation movement. I was then promoted to shinuchi in 1988. Since then, the number of female Koudanshi has soared, and now, it’s been said that there are more women in Koudan than men. Koudan is part of our history.
Koudanshi Kanda Yoko and the Japan Association for the Promotion of Koudan will continue to keep this beautiful tradition alive to be passed down to the next generation.
